Last month a client sent me her daughter's passport photo over WhatsApp. On my Windows laptop it showed a blank icon; the visa portal called it "invalid format"; her iPhone displayed it perfectly. Same file, three realities. The culprit was four letters: HEIC — High Efficiency Image Container, the format every iPhone has shot since 2017. Half my ID-photo rescue cases are HEIC confusion, so let me explain it once, properly — and show you how our free converter (with its secure server fallback) turns any HEIC into a universal JPG in about a minute.
Why Apple forces it on you
Apple's reasoning is genuinely good: HEIC stores the same photo at roughly half the bytes of JPG with equal or better quality, plus 16-bit color and live-photo data. On a 128GB iPhone, that's thousands more photos. Apple optimized for its own garden — where everything opens HEIC natively — and left the rest of the world to catch up. Eight years later, the rest of the world mostly hasn't.
Why nothing else opens it
HEIC decoding needs a licensed HEVC codec stack. Apple and (recent) Samsung phones have it; Windows only opens HEIC if you install Microsoft's paid extension; most desktop browsers, government portals, email clients and office PCs simply show an icon. The pattern of pain is always the same:
- Windows Photos: blank icon or "we don't support this file type" (unless the HEIF extension is installed).
- Visa/exam/job portals: instant "invalid format" — they whitelist JPG/PNG and nothing else.
- WhatsApp/email forwards: usually auto-converted to JPG in transit (lucky), but direct cable transfers stay HEIC (unlucky).
- Old Androids & office PCs: no chance without conversion.
💡 Quick test before anything else
Double-click the file. If it opens, screenshot the error-free path: you just need a format change. If nothing opens it, you need conversion — which is exactly below. Either way, don't rename .heic to .jpg: the bytes stay HEIC and portals detect the lie.
4 ways to convert HEIC to JPG
- Our free converter (fastest). Upload the HEIC to the image converter — Safari and latest Chrome decode it right in the browser, then pick JPG at quality 90. If your browser can't open it, a "Convert on Server" button appears: one click, our backend decodes it securely (memory-only, auto-deleted, never stored) and hands you a real JPG to continue with.
- iPhone itself. Photos app → Share → the receiving app often gets an auto-converted JPG (Mail and WhatsApp do this). Unreliable for portals that need the actual file.
- Windows Photos (with extension). Install Microsoft's HEIF Image Extensions, open, "Save as" JPG. Works, but the extension is paid in some regions and the UI confuses non-technical users.
- macOS Preview. Open → File → Export → JPEG. Flawless if you own a Mac — irrelevant if you don't.
For portal uploads, method 1 wins: the converted JPG can go straight into exact-pixel sizing with our Image Resizer and KB targeting with the Image Compressor — the full acceptance pipeline in one place.
Does converting lose quality?
HEIC→JPG at quality 90+: visually nothing. HEIC's efficiency advantage means the source is excellent; a high-quality JPG preserves everything your eyes can see while becoming universally readable. The file gets bigger than the HEIC (that's the price of compatibility), but stays far smaller than a PNG of the same photo. One rule: convert once, from the original — never HEIC→JPG→PNG→JPG in circles.
⚠️ And HEIC output?
No browser on earth can encode HEIC — it needs Apple-licensed encoders. Any site offering in-browser "HEIC output" is handing you a renamed file. We deliberately don't offer it; honesty beats a fake button. Convert from HEIC to everything — that's the direction that matters.
Make iPhone shoot JPG instead
Tired of converting? On iPhone go to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. New shots save as JPG. Trade-off: ~2× the storage per photo. My advice: keep HEIC for memories (efficient storage) and switch to Most Compatible in weeks you're filling forms, applying for visas, or shooting documents. Best of both, one toggle.
HEIC giving you trouble right now?
Upload it — browser or secure server, you'll get a real JPG in a minute. Free, no signup.
🔄 Convert HEIC to JPG FreeFAQs
Is my photo sent to a server when converting HEIC?
Only if your browser can't open HEIC itself — Safari and latest Chrome convert fully in-browser with zero upload. The server fallback (other browsers) uploads once, decodes in memory, and auto-deletes: nothing is stored, logged with your identity, or reused.
HEIC vs JPG: which should I keep long-term?
HEIC for efficient archiving on Apple devices; JPG for anything that must open everywhere for years (documents, portfolios, shared family albums). When in doubt, keep both — storage is cheaper than reshooting.
