Real feedback from people who crop every day
“I crop 10–12 thumbnails a week and this is the fastest tool I've used. The 16:9 preset plus exact 1280×720 export means my thumbnails are always razor sharp. No Photoshop needed anymore.”
“Reels covers, story crops, feed posts — one tool handles every ratio. The straighten slider alone saved so many crooked product shots. And everything stays private, which our clients love.”
“Honestly the compare slider sold me. I can show clients before/after framing instantly. Undo history with Ctrl+Z works exactly like a desktop app. Superb attention to detail.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything about cropping, ratios, quality & privacy
Why cropping matters more than you think
Cropping is the highest-leverage edit in photography
🎯 Stronger Composition
Cropping removes clutter and puts your subject on a rule-of-thirds sweet spot. Tighter framing alone can turn a forgettable snapshot into a portfolio shot.
📱 Platform-Perfect Framing
Every social network crops differently. Pre-cropping to 1:1, 4:5 or 9:16 means Instagram or YouTube never cuts off heads, text or logos.
⚡ Smaller Files, Faster Pages
A cropped image carries fewer pixels — often 50–80% smaller. Pair cropping with compression and your pages load dramatically faster.
🖨️ Print-Ready Dimensions
Passport offices, visa forms and print labs demand exact millimetre sizes. Pixel-exact cropping gets you accepted first time.
🔒 Privacy by Removal
Strangers, number plates or messy backgrounds in frame? Crop them out permanently instead of trusting blur that can sometimes be reversed.
🎨 New Images From Old Ones
One wide photo can become a banner, three portraits and a square avatar. Smart cropping multiplies one shoot into a whole content kit.
Pro cropping techniques
Six rules professionals use on every photo
Follow the rule of thirds
Imagine a 3×3 grid over your photo and place eyes, horizons or subjects on the lines — not dead center. Most great crops obey this one rule.
Crop tight, but keep breathing room
Cut distractions ruthlessly, yet leave a little space in the direction your subject is looking or moving toward. Cramped crops feel claustrophobic.
Never upscale more than 2×
Stretching a 400px selection to 1600px invents pixels and looks soft. If you need it big, start from the highest-resolution original.
Straighten before you crop
Fix tilted horizons first — rotation eats edge pixels. Straighten, then compose your final crop inside the corrected frame.
Export PNG for graphics, JPEG for photos
Text, logos and screenshots stay crisp as PNG. Photographs shrink 70%+ as JPEG quality 85–92 with no visible difference.
Keep one master, export many crops
Always keep the full original. Export platform-specific crops (thumbnail, story, avatar) as separate files instead of re-cropping a crop.
Aspect ratio cheat-sheet
The only ratios most creators ever need
| Ratio | Best for | Export pixels | Common use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 : 1 Square | Feed posts, avatars, thumbnails | 1080 × 1080 | Instagram post, profile photo |
| 4 : 5 Portrait | Maximum feed screen space | 1080 × 1350 | Instagram portrait post |
| 9 : 16 Vertical | Full-screen mobile video | 1080 × 1920 | Reels, Shorts, Stories |
| 16 : 9 Widescreen | Video & presentations | 1280 × 720 | YouTube thumbnail |
| 3 : 1 Header | Profile banners | 1500 × 500 | X / Twitter header |
| 35 : 45 Passport | Official ID documents | 413 × 531 | Passport & visa photo |
💡 Recommendation: when in doubt, crop 4:5 for feeds, 9:16 for stories and 16:9 for video. Then compress the result with our Image Compressor before uploading.
Cropping by the numbers
Portrait posts occupy the most screen space on Instagram
Typical saving when cropping out empty background areas
Time viewers take to judge a thumbnail before clicking
Your photos never leave your browser during cropping
What is image cropping, really?
Image cropping means selecting a rectangular (or circular) region of a photo and discarding everything outside it. Unlike resizing — which squeezes the whole picture — cropping changes what the viewer sees: it removes distractions, fixes composition mistakes and reframes the subject for a specific medium, from a passport form to a YouTube thumbnail. Because it only keeps original pixels, cropping at natural resolution loses zero quality.
Our free online cropper performs every operation inside your browser with the Canvas API: aspect-locked selection, rotation, horizon straightening, exact-pixel export and PNG/JPEG/WebP encoding. No uploads, no watermarks, no accounts. Whether you are preparing a profile picture, a product listing or a full content kit from one shoot, crop first — then optimize with the Image Compressor for the fastest possible pages.
