“Thumbnails come to me as PNGs and need to be JPGs fast. One click, quality slider at 88, done. The live file-size readout means I never guess anymore.”
“Client logos arrive in every format imaginable. The transparency warning alone is worth it — it stopped three black-background disasters this month. Everything stays private too.”
“Finally a converter whose ICO files actually work as favicons. And WebP exports at quality 82 cut my hero images by two-thirds with zero visible difference. Superb.”

PNG vs JPG vs WebP: Which Image Format Should You Actually Use?
I once sent a client 200MB of PNGs for a website. Never again. Here's my plain-English breakdown of PNG, JPG, WebP, BMP and ICO — what each is for, and the one rule that decides everything.
How to Convert Images to Any Format Without Losing Quality
Every conversion tutorial says 'just change the format' — and skips the quality traps. Here's the complete method: quality settings, transparency handling, and the mistakes that silently ruin files.
WebP in 2026: Half the Size, Same Photo (Complete Guide)
I converted a 4,000-photo catalog to WebP: 68% smaller, zero complaints. What WebP actually is, when it beats JPG/PNG, the compatibility truth in 2026, and the exact settings I use.
Photo Upload Rejected? Fix Format Errors for Passport, Visa & Exam Forms

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything about formats, quality, transparency & privacy
Why the format matters more than you think
The right format is a 30-second decision with years of consequences
📄 Portals Accept First Time
SSC, UPSC, passport, visa and college forms demand JPG specifically. Converting WebP/PNG screenshots to JPG ends the 'invalid format' rejection loop.
⚡ Websites Load Faster
The same photo as WebP is ~30% smaller than JPG and ~80% smaller than PNG. Converting uploads to WebP is the cheapest speed win on the web.
🎨 Logos Stay Crisp
JPG smears text and logo edges with compression mush. Converting graphics to PNG keeps every edge razor sharp at any zoom.
📧 Email That Sends
A 8MB PNG screenshot becomes a 400KB JPG at quality 85 — same visible content, emailable anywhere without bounce-backs.
⭐ Real Favicons
Browsers want .ico for tabs and bookmarks. Converting your logo to a proper ICO (not a renamed PNG) makes it show up everywhere.
💾 Storage That Lasts
Phone screenshots pile up as PNGs. Converting archives to JPG/WebP reclaims 70–90% of that space with no visible difference.
Pro conversion techniques
Six rules professionals use on every image
Match format to content, not habit
Photos → JPG/WebP. Text, logos, screenshots → PNG. Favicons → ICO. Windows legacy → BMP. One rule covers 99% of decisions.
Quality 85 is the universal sweet spot
For JPG/WebP photos, 85–92 gives files 60–80% smaller with invisible loss. Below 70, blockiness appears; above 95, bytes explode for nothing.
Check transparency before JPG
If your PNG has transparent areas, JPG will fill them — pick the background deliberately (white for documents) instead of discovering black boxes later.
WebP for web, JPG for sharing
WebP wins on websites (smaller, transparent, modern). JPG wins for email, print labs, government portals and old devices that still don't speak WebP.
Never convert back and forth
PNG → JPG → PNG doesn't restore quality — the JPG step permanently discarded detail. Convert once from the best-quality original you have.
Convert first, then resize & compress
Format sets the encoding, resize sets pixels, compress sets bytes. In that order, each step has the least work — finish with the Compressor for KB targets.
Format cheat-sheet
What each format is actually for
| Format | Best for | Size profile | Common use |
|---|---|---|---|
| PNG | Exact pixels, transparency | Lossless · bigger files | Logos, screenshots, graphics |
| JPG | Photos & sharing | Lossy · tiny files | Photos, email, portals, print |
| WebP | Modern websites | ~30% smaller than JPG | Hero images, blog photos |
| AVIF | Cutting-edge web | Smallest lossy | Modern browsers (auto-detected) |
| GIF | Simple graphics | 256 colors | Memes, simple animations source |
| BMP | Legacy compatibility | Uncompressed · huge | Old Windows software |
| TIFF | Print & archive | Uncompressed · huge | Print labs, scanning |
| TGA | Textures + alpha | Uncompressed | Game & video pipelines |
| ICO | Favicons only | Max 256px | Browser tabs, bookmarks |
| SVG | Vector wrapper | ~PNG size | Wherever SVG is accepted |
| QOI / PPM | Dev & pipelines | Lossless | Unix tools, game assets |
| HEIC | iPhone storage | Efficient · Apple-only | Convert FROM it, not to it |
💡 Recommendation: photos to WebP 82 for the web and JPG 90 for sharing; graphics always PNG. Then finish with our Image Compressor if a KB target still demands it.

What is image conversion, really?
Image conversion means re-encoding the same pixels in a different file format — turning, say, a PNG into a JPG without changing what the picture shows. Unlike resizing (which changes dimensions) or cropping (which cuts the frame), conversion only changes how pixels are stored: losslessly (PNG, BMP, ICO) or with smart discarding of invisible detail (JPG, WebP) for dramatically smaller files.
Our free online converter performs every operation inside your browser with the Canvas API plus genuine BMP and ICO encoders: quality control, background handling for transparency, and correct file extensions. No uploads, no watermarks, no accounts. Convert first — then adjust dimensions with the Image Resizer or squeeze bytes with the Image Compressor for the fastest possible pages.
